  • Summer 2022: At the Geological Society of Trinidad and Tobago (GSTT) Conference, Paul Mann and Tricia Alvarez, PhD, now at Heritage Petroleum Ltd, Trinidad and Tobago) presented a synthesis of information from their recent publications in AAPG Memoir 123. This one-day virtual short course was held on July 7. For registration details, click here.
  • Spring 2022: Students and researchers at the University of Houston Dept. of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences presented at the 35th Annual Student Research Conference and Alumni & Industry Open House on Friday, April 29.   • Spring 2022: Congrats to Alejandro Escalona and his University of Stavanger team for placing third in the AAPG Europe Region Imperial Barrel Award 2022. After 8 weeks for intensive work and a 2 days of competition between 9 European teams from France, Hungary, Italy, Switzerland, Norway, Poland and Romania the three top teams have been selected by a panel of 6 judges from the energy industry. Congrats to La Salle, University of Naples, and University of Stavanger and the 45 students who participated to this event for having successfully achieved such a unique and important milestone in their education path.
  • Spring 2022: CBTH PhD student Md Nahidul Hasan presented at the Sedimentary Basin Analysis conference hosted by Pemex on Wednesday, March 9th. His presentation is titled "Thermal stress and expelled hydrocarbons from Mesozoic-Cenozoic source rocks, southern Gulf of Mexico."

  • Fall 2021: Congratulations to CBTH students Bryan Moore (1st Place Poster Presentation, MS and early PhD category), Daniella Easley (2nd Place Poster Presentation, Advanced PhD category), and Sean Romito (3rd Place Poster Presentation, Advanced PhD category), who received awards at the Houston Geological Society and University of Houston Robert E. Sheriff lecture series and student poster competition on November 1st.

  • Fall 2021: CBTH researchers Bryan Moore, Kenneth Shipper, and Paul Mann presented at the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Caribbean Technical Symposium and E&P Summit on Recent Activity and Exploration Opportunities in Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.   • Fall 2019: Congrats to Jack Kenning for best oral student talk at the 2019 Geogulf conference in Houston in November 2019. His poster was a basin modeling study of source rock maturity for the Yucatan margin in the Mexican Gulf of Mexico. Click here for more information.

  • Spring 2019: Congratulations to CBTH-supported, UH PhD student, Jack Kenning, who won first place in the AAPG student poster competition at the 2019 American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) International Competition on May 18! His poster was on the subsurface structure and stratigraphy of the Mexican Ridges in the western Gulf of Mexico.   • Spring 2019: Congratulations to the UH IBA Team, who won first place in the Imperial Barrel Award Program (IBA) of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) International Competition on May 18!   • Spring 2019: On Friday, April 26, 2019, the University of Houston hosted its annual “Student Research Day and Alumni-Industry Open House." A schedule of events and presentations, including CBTH presentations, is availble by clicking here.

- 2018 -

  • Fall 2018: The CBTH Project was featured in the latest issue of GEO ExPro in an article on the conjugate margins of the Gulf of Mexico. The work highlight was the CBTH-supported master's research of Andrew Steier, who is an now an explorationist with the GOM group at Total in Houston. Other CBTH work that this study was based on includes Luan Nguyen (Nguyen and Mann, 2015) and the 2018 PhD study by Pin Lin (now at Chinese National Offshore Oil Company in China). Current students working on various aspects of GOM conjugate margins include Jack Kenning (PhD), Nawaz Bugti (PhD), Mei Liu (PhD) and Marcus Zinecker (PhD).   • Fall 2018: Congrats to the three CBTH-supported students who placed first, second, and third at the Annual meeting of the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies that was held in Shreveport, Louisiana, in October, 2018. Omar Zavala (undergrad) was in first place with a poster comparing the cooling histories of the conjugate margins of the South Atlantic Ocean; Jack Kenning (PhD student) placed second for his poster on Eocene-Oligocene mass transport deposits in the Mexican Ridges province, western Gulf of Mexico; and Nawaz Bugti for his poster on structural restoration of the Corsair normal fault zone in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico.
  • Fall 2018: Congrats to Jack Kenning for his first place poster award at the student poster session (Advanced PhD category) at the HGS-EAS, 20th Annual Robert E. Sheriff lecture for his presentation on the Mexican Ridges in the western Gulf of Mexico. Click here for more information.
  • Fall 2018: Thanks to everyone who attended the CBTH Annual Sponsors Meeting on Friday, September 21, 2018! This year, we had a total of 57 attendees (34 from industry, 23 from UH/UiS). For more information, including a copy of the presentation schedule, click here.
  • Fall 2018: Congrats to the three CBTH-supported students who placed first, second, and third at the 15th Annual Houston Geological Society/Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain Conference on African Exploraiton. The conference is held in Houston and London in alternating years. Marcus Zinecker was in first place with a poster comparing the conjugate margins of northwest Africa and the Blake-Bahama plateau; Omar Zavala placed second for his poster comparing the thermochronology of the South Atlantic Ocean; and Geraldine Tijerina placed third for her poster comparing the thermochronology of the conjugate margins of the Central Atlantic.
  • Fall 2018: Karilys Castillo, who completed her MS in 2014 with the CBTH project, presented a talk at the meeting of the Colombia Geoscientists Network from 6-8 pm on Thursday, Sept 20, at the The Bougainvilleas. 12126 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77077. Since completing her MS at UH on eastern Venezuela, Karilys worked for three years as a geophysicist with the Anadarko Offshore Colombia team and is currently working with the Advanced Analytics and Technology team. The title of her talk is: Mass transport complexes (MTC) characterization, Sinu basin, offshore Colombia.
  • Fall 2018: Paul Mann was part of the organization committee and presented at the AAPG Geoscience Technology Workshop entitled: Deep and ultra-deep petroleum systems: What we know and what we don't know," which was held in Beijing, China, on October 26-28, 2018. The meeting will provide a forum for the discussion of all aspects of the new deep frontiers that include: deepwater exploration systems (turbidites, etc.), deepwater offshore discoveries (including all depositional systems), and deep and ultra-deep strata onshore.   • Fall 2018: Paul Mann and other CBTH students and graduates presented at the AAPG Hedberg Conference on Geology of Middle America - The Gulf of Mexico, Yucatan, Caribbean, Grenada and Tobago basins, and their Margins - on July 2-5,2018 in Siguenza, Spain.   • Spring 2018: Congrats to CBTH students Lucia Torrado and Andrew Steier for their leadership of the AAPG Wildcatters student group at UH that won the top AAPG student group award for the USA at the AAPG Salt Lake City meeting. Click here for more information.
  • Spring 2018: Congrats to Jack Kenning for his fourth place poster award at the student poster session at the AAPG meeting in Salt Lake City for his presentation on the Mexican Ridges in the western Gulf of Mexico. Click here for more information.
  • Spring 2018: Congrats to former CBTH student Kyle Reuber (PhD, 2017) for his AAPG Jules Braunstein Memorial best poster award for the 2017 Annual Meeting. Click here for more information.
  • Spring 2018: Congratulations to first-year, CBTH PhD student Jack Kenning, who won the 1st Place Oral Presentation award (session 1) at the April 27, 2018, UH Student Research Day and to senior, CBTH, undergraduate student, Omar Zavala, who placed third in the undergraduate student poster competition. CBTH PhD students Lucia Torrado and Jack Kenning also received scholarships for Outstanding Graduate Work in Geology at the event.   • Spring 2018: For the second year in a row, the UiS program in Norway - led by Drs. Alejandro Escalona and Nestor Cardozo - was ranked number one in teaching quality at the University of Stavanger and was voted the best graduate program in Norway in a “student barometer survey”.   • Spring 2018: Congrats to Claudio Bartolini and Paul Mann for winning the Robert H. Dott, Sr., Memorial Award for their jointly-edited publication, "Petroleum Geology and Potential of the Colombian Caribbean Margin" (Memoir 108) that was published in 2015. Their award will be presented at the AAPG ACE Conference opening ceremony on Sunday, May 20, 2018, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The volume contained the papers of several now graduated CBTH-UH students including Rocio Bernal (PhD, 2015), Javier Sanchez (PhD, 2015), Luis Carlos Carvajal (PhD, 2017), and Joan Blanco (PhD, 2017), and CBTH-UT Austin student (Henry Campos, MS, 2011).   • Spring 2018: Congrats to Matt Copley for completing his MS at Colorado School of Mines and his new job at Anadarko. Matt worked with CBTH as an undergrad at UH for 2015-16.

  • Fall 2017: CBTH PhD students Shenelle Gomez and Lucia Torrado recently presented at the UH EAS-HGS Sheriff Lecture on Nov. 27, 2017. Click on their names to view videos of Shenelle and Lucia explaining their posters to AAPG President Charles Sternbach.

  • Spring 2017: Two articles involving the CBTH Project will be featured in the June 2017 Issue of AAPG Explorer. The first, available here, concerns CBTH PhD Student Lucia Torrado's recent 1st place win at the AAPG Student Poster Competition, while the second, available here, concerns the UH IBA Team's recent win in the international competition at the AAPG Annual Convention & Exhibiton.
  • Spring 2017: Congrats to Lisa Watson for completing her PhD dissertation at the University of Utrecht, titled, "Spatial-based assessment at continental to global scale: Case studies in petroleum exploration and ecosystem services." Lisa started working with the CBTH project in 2005 as an sophomore geology major at the University of Texas. Following her graduation she moved to Norway in 2009 where she continued working with the CBTH project at the Univ of Stavanger. Lisa previously completed her MS at the University of Utrecht in 2011. She is now an associate professor in GIS studies at the University of Stavanger and continues to work with the CBTH project and attend the yearend meetings at the University of Houston.
  • Spring 2017: Congrats to Patrick Loureiro who has completed his PhD with CBTH on the rifted margin of southeastern Brazil and submitted the final version of his dissertation to UH. On July 17, Patrick started his full-time job with Hess in Houston working with the Hess Eastern Canada offshore exploration group.
  • Spring 2017: Congrats to both Kyle Reuber and Luis Carlos Carvajal who both completed their PhDs for the May 2017, graduation deadline and participated in the University of Houston commencement ceremony on May 13 at Houston’s NGR stadium. Kyle will continue to work full-time for Ion on multiclient studies along Atlantic margins. Luis Carlos is working a post-PhD, basin modeling study with CBTH on the Colombian and Venezuelan basins and present is results at the yearend meeting on September 29.
  • Spring 2017: Paul Mann, Shenelle Gomez, Kyle Reuber, and Tricia Alvarez all attended and presented at the 6th Geological Conference of the GSTT in Trinidad on May 22-24. 2017. Mann and former CBTH PhD student, Tricia Alvarez - now an assistant professor in petroleum geosciences at the University of Trinidad and Tobago - provided a one-day, shortcourse to 26 meeting participants on the topic: Recent Developments in Understanding the Regional Tectonics and Petroleum Geology of the Trinidad Area.   • Spring 2017: Congratulations to the 2017 UH Imperial Barrel team who won 1st place in the Gulf Coast competition with nine other universities. The team will compete in the international competition at the AAPG ACE meeting on Saturday, April 1 in Houston.   • Spring 2017: Congrats to Shenelle Gomez for receiving a summer internship with Shell. Shenelle also presented at the Houston Geological Society International Dinner at the Westchase Hilton on Monday, February 20, 2017, on the topic of “Tectonostratigraphic evolution of the Barbados accretionary prism and its controls on hydrocarbon prospectivity in offshore Barbados.”

  • Fall 2016: Congrats to Joan Blanco (PhD student, CBTH project) and Alexandre Silva (PhD student, EAS) for placing third place in the SEG Challenge Bowl World Finals at the SEG meeting in Dallas in October.   • Fall 2016: Congratulations to CBTH students Andrew Steier, Rasheed Ajala, and Kyle Reuber, who won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, respectively, at the 15th Conference on Africa E&P hosted by HGS/PESGB.
  • Spring 2016: Congratulations to Patrick Loureiro who accepted a full-time offer with Hess Corporation in Houston starting in the middle of 2017, following the completion of his UH PhD study on the Brazil-West Africa conjugate margins. Patrick was a summer intern for Hess in the summer of 2016 working on NW Africa and completed his MS with the CBTH project in 2014 on the Puerto Rico-Virgin Islands area.
  • Spring 2016: Congratulations to Marie de los Santos, CBTH-supported UH undergrad geology major, who completed her master’s degree on isotope studies in August 2016, at the University of Arizona and is now working as a technician at the University of Arizona Isotope lab.
  • Spring 2016: Congratulations to Lourdes Rodriguez who competed her MS degree on the Espino rift of Venezuela and is starting a full time job as a geophysicist with Sanchez Energy in Houston where she has been working parttime for the past year.
  • Spring 2016: Congratulations to Matt Copley who graduated with his BS from UH and is starting the MS program with the industry-funded reservoir characterization group at Colorado School of Mines. As a CBTH-supported undergrad at UH, Matt completed a study of the Somali basin of East Africa that he presented at the 2016 AAPG Annual meeting in Calgary.
  • Spring 2016: Congratulations to Javier Sanchez! Javier joined the Department of Geology at EAFIT University in Medellin, Colombia, in July 2016, where he is an assistant, tenure-track professor teaching structural geology, tectonics, basin analysis and petroleum geology. Javier was a post-doctoral researcher with the CBTH project from September 2015, to June 2016, where he completed several articles on basin modeling and geomorphology in northern Colombia. We thank Javier for his five years of productive and dedicated service to the CBTH project both as a PhD student and a postdoctoral researcher and wish him luck in his new professor position. We hope to continue collaborations with Javier and his colleagues and geoscience students at EAFIT University.
  • Spring 2016: Congratulations to the CBTH student awardees Shenelle Gomez and Luis Carlos Carvajal, who received second and third place, respectively, in the 2016 AAPG-ACE student poster competition in Calgary, Canada. Four CBTH students were selected from a pool of 90 first-authored, accepted abstracts to the Calgary meeting for the competition judged by a panel of 5-6 judges.   • Spring 2016: CBTH student Luan Nguyen gave a talk at the Geophysical Society of Houston: Potential fields SIG Dinner on May 19th
  • Spring 2016: Congratulations for Pin Lin’s AAPG grant-in-aid that will fund her study of source rock maturity in the South Florida basin. She will travel to the Florida State Geological Survey core faculty in Tallahassee to sample cores. Analysis will be done at the UH Petroleum Geochemistry Lab. Click here to read more.
  • Spring 2016: 15 CBTH graduate and undergraduate student researchers presented at the 2016 Research Day and Industry Open House hosted by the UH Dept. of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences on the main UH campus on Friday, April 29, 2016. Click here for abstracts and more details.
  • Spring 2016: Congratulations to the UH Team, including CBTH PhD student Joan Marie Blanco (currently completing her PhD on Venezuela 3D seismic data), who won the Geological Society of Houston's Regional Challenge Bowl in April and will go on to compete in the finals at the SEG International Exposition and 86th Annual meeting in Dallas.   • Spring 2016: Congratulations to the 2016 University of Houston Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) team who placed second in a field of 12 Gulf Coast universities on April 15, 2016. Team members included Shenelle Gomez (Team captain and CBTH-supported PhD student working on the Barbados area), David Mora, Jing Hua, Lingfei Mao, and Jordan Dickinson. First place was the University of New Orleans and third place was Texas A&M University. The UH AAPG student chapter received a check for $2000 from AAPG.   • Spring 2016: Congratulations to CBTH undergraduate Sabrina Martinez, who was recently selected to participate in the ExxonMobil Guadalupe Field School on April 2-9, 2016 in West Texas and New Mexico. Sabrina is currently working for the CBTH Project on the Puerto Rico area. For more information, click here.
  • Spring 2016: On Feb. 29, we provided an updated GIS database for our sponsors covering on- and offshore Mexico, as well as a compilation map of continent-ocean boundaries in the CBTH study area. The files can be downloaded via our secure FTP.
  • Spring 2016: On March 1, 2016, all papers from the AAPG Bulletin special issue titled "Geologic and geophysical synthesis of the Nicaraguan Rise and western Caribbean: A framework for understanding its petroleum potential" (editor: P. Mann) were submitted for review. These papers will be available for sponsors following the review process.

  • Fall 2015: CBTH students presented in the EAS student poster competition at the UH-HGS annual Robert E. Sheriff lecture on Monday, November 16, 2015. CBTH students were recognized with two of the three first place awards: Callum Byers (Undergrad category) and Zach Martindale (Beginning PhD category).

  • Fall 2014: The American Geophysical Union hosted its Fall Meeting on December 15-19, 2014 in San Francisco. CBTH Presenters included Ian Ambrosius, Steve Leslie, Jiannan Wang, and Patrick Loureiro. For more information, click here.
  • Fall 2014: Congratulations to Patrick Loureiro, Naila Dowla, and Derek Scott for their first, second, and third place poster awards, respectively, at the 13th Annual Conference on African Exploration and Production, jointly organized by the Houston Geological Society and the Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain. The meeting was held on September 9-10, 2014, at The Westin Houston, Memorial City.

  • Summer 2014: Congratulations to Lucia Torrado, who was recently published in the August 2014 issue of Geophysics. This publication was adapted from her award-winning "Top Ten Presentation" for the 2013 AAPG ICE meeting in Cartagena, Colombia.
  • Summer 2014: Congratulations to Tricia Alvarez for her third place award for best student oral presentation on her study of the Trinidad area at the 2014 AAPG ACE meeting. This makes the third student presentation award at this meeting to the CBTH group. Tricia also won a third place best student poster award at the 2009 AAPG ACE meeting.
  • Spring 2014: The University of Houston Research Day was held on Friday, April 25 from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. Of the 14 UH award-winning presentations by the Dept. of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences to be recognized, 7 of them were presented by grad students supported by the CBTH project.   • Spring 2014: Congratulations to Bryan Ott and Javier Sanchez, who came in 3rd and 4th place, respectively, at the AAPG 2014 Annual Meeting Student Poster Competition! Congratulations also go out to Carolina Mejia, who received the AAPG Foundation 2014 Grant-In-Aid. Click here to read more.
  • Spring 2014: Congratulations to Rocio Bernal for passing her PhD defense on April 1, 2014, at the University of Houston. After finalizing the final dissertation document and a break, Dr. Bernal will begin her job as an explorationist with ConocoPhillips in Houston. Her five year PhD study was entirely supported by the CBTH project.
  • Spring 2014: We thank Halliburton for selecting the University of Houston as one of their five US universities to better understand the role of the Halliburton University Grant Program (UGP) in UH educational and research activities. Halliburton provides UH with Landmark interpretation software.

  • Spring 2014:Congratulations to Lisa Bingham for her promotion to Associate Professor in Geology and GIS in the Department of Petroleum Engineering at the University of Stavanger. Lisa is one of the longest serving workers for the CBTH project: undergrad research assistant at UT Austin in 2002-5; CBTH project manager at UT from 2005-9; and Stavanger from 2009-present.

  • CBTH PhD candidate Jack Kenning, who recently won 1st place in the Student Poster Competition at the AAPG 2019 Annual Convention and Exhibition, is the subject of an article in the October 2019 issue of AAPG Explorer. Click here to read the article.
  • The UH IBA Team won first place in the Imperial Barrel Award Program (IBA) of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) International Competition on May 18, 2019. They previously won first place in the Gulf Coast Section competition on March 17. Click here to read a writeup on their achievement in AAPG Explorer.
  • The CBTH Project was featured in the December 2018 of GEO ExPro in an article on the conjugate margins of the Gulf of Mexico. The work highlight was the CBTH-supported master's research of Andrew Steier, who is an now an explorationist with the GOM group at Total in Houston. Other CBTH work that this study was based on includes Luan Nguyen (Nguyen and Mann, 2015) and the 2018 PhD study by Pin Lin (now at Chinese National Offshore Oil Company in China).
